Two more about to bloom.

April 20, 2021

A few warm days and daffodil plants are growing. Last year it was the middle of May before we saw the first flower.

Although Pierce Place tends to be a little slower than Len Mitzel Meadow in terms of the number of plants up, partly due to very long grass creating a protective layer, this could be the first site with a flower this season.

There are two plants here that already have buds showing.

If you are are site, please walk carefully. Many plants are just starting to come through the grass.

RE/MAX Medalta Meadow, at the Medicine Hat College site, has many plants showing vigorous growth.

Len Mitzel Meadow, particularly in one area that catches the sun and is slightly protected, there are several rows of sturdy little plants. None are big enough yet for buds.

Easter Sunday, April 4, 2021

The daffodils are just starting to grow, which is about two weeks ahead of last spring.

At Pierce Place several daffodils were just starting to pop up through the thick layer of grass left over from last fall.

At Len Mitzel Meadow there is much more sun exposure and many bulbs were sending up shoots above the soil level.

It was April 28, 2020 that the first flower swayed in the breeze at this location.

The Daffodil Project completed its fifth planting season in the fall of 2019. It was the halfway point through the planned term of the project from 2015 to 2025.

It was decided that it was an appropriate time to take a couple years off to determine the longevity of the project and any possible new initiatives.

The donations that had already been received were used to buy bulbs which were planted in the fall of 2020. (see Financial Transparency for more details)

No additional donations will be accepted for the time being.

The committee has been overwhelmed and gratified by the volunteers who have so readily participated in planting days and the many people who have donated money for all the bulbs that have been planted so far. The response has been tremendous.

The idea for The Daffodil Project was inspired by a scene from the movie Dr. Zhivago. After a bitterly cold winter in the Ural mountains the ice and snow gives way to a field of daffodils that dance and sway in a spring breeze.

All donations made for bulbs went entirely to purchase bulbs. Any expenses incurred were absorbed by
members of The Daffodil Project committee and a number of local businesses generously donated equipment.

  1. It is great to see the daffodils at the Shepherd site. I hope that future plantings will be closer to the highway so that from the highway one will be able to see that they are daffodils and not dandelions. I pass by that area almost every day and while I’m pleased to see how well they are doing, I always wish that they were close enough to be able to recognize the flowers. If I weren’t aware of the project I would probably think it was a big patch of dandelions! Here’s to a successful project.

  2. We have been following the Daffodil Project from CAPE TOWN, South Africa and we think it is so great that the whole community, including the politicians, are involved in beautifying their city for the benefit also of those who may just be passing through.
Congratulations, Gillian Slade, for spearheading this project. Generations still to come will benefit from this.
